Everything You Need to Know About Toner Masking

Toner Mask contrary to the widespread belief did not really originate and start with the Koreans nor is it a new skin care hack.

Even though it is widely popular and common among Korean Skincare worldwide and is getting so much attention from them. As a matter of fact, Japanese women had already been doing and using Toner Mask for decades.

It is originated from Japan and it is still very popular in Asian countries.

Toner mask is simply a method that allows you dip and soak two or three cotton pads into your fave toner or essence or even both, then stick them on your face like a mask for three to five minutes.

It is one of the easiest ways to hydrate, calm and balance skin in less than five minutes, instead of applying seven layers of skin care products.

1. Get The Right Cotton Pad

First, you need cotton pads, preferably square or rectangular. Or if you really want to cover your entire face like these sheet masks, you can get a compressed facial mask that you can soak with the toners of your choice. Getting the right cotton pad is important, you don’t want a cotton pad that will leave fiber on your face. It makes the whole process messy.

A good cotton pad should have a smooth and soft texture with a high absorbency level.

2. Choose A Toner

Then choose a toner. You can choose not only a toner but also a facial mist or a moisturizing essence, depending on the amount of product you are ready to distribute and what you have on hand. I suggest choosing a product that your skin already knows and likes, to avoid any irritation that can cause an eruption.

Finally, stay away from products containing alcohol or astringents, as these would dry your skin. Also, avoid using a product that contains active ingredients such as AHA BHA and vitamin C, as it may also dry or hurt your skin.

For example:

  • If you want to banish dry skin, use a moisturizing toner that will provide hydration to your skin.
  • If you have large pores, use a toner that will helps minimize your pores.
  • If you have sensitive skin, use a toner that will soothe and calm your redness.

How Do You Toner Mask?

After double cleansing, the skin is ready for the toner mask. Soak a cotton pad with your toner. I use Hada Labo Gokujyun Lotion, which really helps to moisturize my skin. You need the cotton to be wet so that it adheres easily to your face without dropping anywhere or falling. If you do not wet it enough, the cotton can be abrasive for the skin and it will dry more quickly, without sufficient hydration. Once you have soaked the cotton, place it on the parts of your face that you want to moisturize and calm. I use mine on my forehead and my two cheeks but I stay away from my eye area.

You can get a multi-layer cotton pad, and separate it into individual sheets. Try to extend the cotton pad as much as you can to cover your entire face. Be careful not to tear them apart. You need to do it slowly and gently.  Then you’ll have a few cotton pads to use while you only need to fully soak just one cotton pad.

If you want to do toner mask on entire face, you can follow the guide below.

First of all, divide your face into three parts which are the t-zone, cheeks, and the chin.

We use two cotton pads on the forehead. Secondly, use another four cotton pads should cover your cheek area; take another cotton pad and tear it into a half, then use it on your nose and above your lips area. Lastly, use one cotton pad for your chin.

Remove the cotton pads before it dries out then continue with your skincare routine.

How Long Should You Leave It?

The length of your work depends on the product and cotton pads you use, but in general, about three to five minutes should be enough. Do not wait until the cotton is completely dry on your face; it actually dries your skin. So, after a few minutes, check the moisture level and temperature of the cotton once in a while by gently touching it. If you know that the cotton is starting to dry a little and is warm to the touch, it’s time to throw it away. If there is any product left on your skin, gently pat your skin to help absorb the product. You can then follow the rest of your skincare routine. It is generally recommended that it should be left for 5-8 minutes.

Do You Need to Wash It Off?

You do not need to wash it off after you are done with toner mask. Just gently pad the remaining toner until it is fully absorbed. Then continue with your serum and moisturizer.

How Frequent Should You Toner Mask?

Toner mask is an excellent way to balance your skin without having to use any layer of skin product. It is advisable to do it at least 3 times a week.

How Long Each Time?

Bear in mind that do not wait until the cotton pads dry out. Remove the cotton pads in 3-5 minutes is just perfect.

Why Toner mask?

Toner is an excellent step to add to your skin care routine to maintain clear, healthy skin. Traditionally, toners were used to restore the pH balance of your skin after cleansing. But today’s toners do it and so much more! During the warmer months, a skin tonic can be helpful in fighting rashes caused by sweat, sunscreen, and dirt clogging our pores (or a combination of the three.) During the summer season, our skin tends to be oily. Toner is also useful if you have skin prone to acne. Below are some of the major reasons why Toner Mask is very essential.

  • It acts as a strategy to replenish moisture in the stratum corneum of skin and also provide hydration to the skin.
  • It is one of the major steps taken in preparing skin for makeup or skin care products.
  • It also calms and soothes redness on your skin.

Is the Toner Mask Suitable For All Skin Types?

Absolutely yes. Toner mask is suitable for all skin types, all you need to do is pick the correct toner for your skin for the best result.
